JULY 2017 Welcome to the July issue of Style, an issue in which we are celebrating all things winter. Let us take you on a tour around the southern hemisphere to check out the top ski fields. We have the information you need to decide between Cerro Catedral and Portillo in South America, or Roundhill and Craigieburn in our own South Island, for your next getaway. In our home section, we focus on furniture. Georgina McCormack explores a selection of local and international designs that truly honours the materials from which these statement pieces are made, while Luci Morris takes us through a beautiful family home, which owners Peter and Judith Lange designed around a vision of bringing the family together. One of the most enjoyable aspects of putting together this issue was working on our childrenswear fashion shoot – there is something so refreshing about working with children. Our photographer Charlie Jackson used the set to create a magical winter wonderland, which brought out the cheeky nature and playful side of our children – all of whom are related to a member of the Style team. Keeping fit mentally and physically in winter can be a challenge, especially if you are in an office all day. Our wellness writer Elly McGuinness offers advice to keep you fighting fit in our beauty section. Following this, we look at essential tips for keeping skin hydrated to ensure you feel your best this winter. CERRO CATEDRAL, ARGENTINA
PORTILLO, CHILE
Located in Argentina’s Patagonia Lake District, Cerro Catedral is one of the largest ski areas in South America, with stunning scenery in both the village and on the mountain itself. Translating to Cathedral Hill, its name was presumably inspired by the dramatic rock peaks that crown the mountain’s summit. It has diverse terrain offerings – from tree skiing to a number of off-piste or unmarked options – across its 607 skiable hectares, providing slopes for every level of confidence and experience. It’s also one of the most developed ski areas in South America, making it a good choice for families or travelling groups. Terrain: 17% of its trails are beginner runs, 35% serve intermediates, and a large portion caters to more skilled skiers: 26% of runs are advanced, and 22% are for experts only. Après-ski: There is no lack of nightlife, with a diverse range of bars, restaurants, dance clubs and even a casino. There are also a variety of lodging options, meaning the mountain can cater to all tastes and budgets. When to go: June to mid-October Level: Family Details: www.catedralaltapatagonia.com
Located two hours north-east of Santiago and just 5km from the Argentinian border, Portillo is often the first place that comes to mind for southern hemisphere skiing. Portillo is one of the oldest resorts in the area, and part of its rich history includes hosting several World Championship skiing competitions – the only southern hemisphere country to do so. The trails tend to be uncrowded, and Portillo’s high elevation – 3310m at the highest point – lends to dry powder that makes for some great turns. Terrain: Portillo is also accessible by heli-skiing, and its 526 skiable hectares are broken down as 15% beginner, 30% intermediate, 30% advanced, and 25% expert. Après-ski: Portillo does not have a resort town. The focus is on skiing, and skiing only, which is one of the reasons it’s a popular place for world-class skiers to train. Portillo’s main lodging option is the famous yellow hotel, which is often heralded as a hallmark of the mountain. THREDBO RESORT, AUSTRALIA
TREBLE CONE RESORT, NEW ZEALAND
Situated in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Thredbo Resort caters to everyone due to its extensive mix of trails, which vary from beginner slopes to some of the longest runs in Australia. Thredbo is known for its family-orientated feel and offers a special ski-school service for children; allowing them to gain confidence on the slopes in safety, while also giving them the chance to make friends and play. Family programmes are also available, as are snowboarding lessons and snow biking experiences. With plenty of childcare facilities and kids clubs available, parents can tackle the steep slopes while children are taken care of. Terrain: 550 hectares, with beginner slopes covering 10%, intermediate 45%, and advanced 45% of the skiable area. Après-ski: While Treble Cone does not have its own town or village, Wanaka is only a short drive away. On the field, there is the Base Lodge Sun Deck which offers made-to-order burgers and pizzas, as well as a café, bar, and sun deck. Roundhill is a family ski field with stunning views of Aoraki Mt Cook, the Southern Alps and Lake Tekapo. The learners’ slope is fantastic for little ones as it features a platter lift and two beginners’ rope tows, while, for intermediate skiers, there are two T-bars that provide access to trails with lots of natural dips and curves. If you are seeking something more adventurous, Roundhill is home to Australasia’s largest vertical drop at a vertigo-inducing 783m, and also plays host to the longest and steepest rope tow in the world. Terrain: Its size has increased significantly in recent years from 60 to approximately 600 skiable hectares, making it one of the largest New Zealand ski resorts. This expansion was brought about by the addition of the record-breaking Heritage Express Rope Tow, and has also allowed for the incorporation of an advanced area to what was a beginner/intermediate field. Après-ski: The ski field facilities and services are somewhat basic, but more than adequate for the essentials. The day lodge has a licenced café, and many visitors bring along a chilly bin with their own food and drink and set up deck chairs. The Von Brown Hut is a fabulous spot for après-ski drinks. Tony Jenkins CEO of Harcourts Holmwood talks about their new purpose built real estate office on Ilam Road So let’s start with asking about why the old building had to go: The earthquake created a significant amount of damage to the building which compromised its functionality as well as falling below the safety standards we believed necessary for our clients and our team. Once the decision was made we started the long process of what would best suit the needs of our clients and our staff. In some ways this was a battle between what we knew we needed and tried to look into the crystal ball to future proof things as much as we could.
Given that you had really a blank canvas to work from for the new building, what was your vision of what it should offer? I have always believed that the client should come first in business and so central to our thinking was what can we do to make the sometimes stressful process of selling or buying a property easier? With that in mind we knew there had to be several non negotiables: access had to be easy to see a Sales Consultant or attend an auction. Auctions are a cornerstone of our business and I was determined to have a quality auction room as part of the new building. It had to be a friendly place and that is why, we will have a café on site so our clients can have a coffee and discuss their property needs or come upstairs and meet in one of our customised meeting rooms to chat in private with a Consultant. My vision is to make this office, this team and this franchise the very best in real estate.
So how is this building going to help you achieve that? Of course a building by itself can achieve nothing, but with the team we have, and the state-of-the-art technology we have invested in, I firmly believe we have the basis

for future growth. We want to add further experienced Real Estate Consultants as well as select a number of new sales consultants who wish to take advantage of what Holmwood provides. eter and Judith Lange’s home is bold and compelling, as well as generous and inviting. From the outside in, the home’s strong lines intersect and create new shapes, whilst colours and textures interact in ways that are refreshing, sophisticated and creative. For the couple, building from the ground up was not something they had planned on doing, in either the near or distant future. Peter explains that their “1970s red brick house didn’t flow. The layout was ‘higglety pigglety’ having been added onto several times.” In spite of this, they had been in the house for several years and in the leafy hillside neighbourhood of Cashmere for over a decade – and had no intention of moving or building. The earthquake of February 2011 shook up life as they knew it, damaging the family home beyond repair. Reluctantly, the couple undertook the challenge of building a new home for themselves and their teenage daughters. With the option to design-and-build and get exactly what they wanted, they elected to build with Benchmark Homes. “Going into it, we had a reasonable idea of what we wanted,” says Peter, “a family home with large open-plan living that would capitalise on views up the valley.” Using an architect through Benchmark Homes, the Langes finally got to see their ideas materialise. “That was the most exciting part,” says Peter, “We knew what we wanted, but we needed someone else to visualise and configure it for us. It was an ‘oh wow’ moment.”

With a vision for the house now clear in their minds, the thing they hadn’t planned on doing now presented itself as a opportunity to create their dream home: a home replete with warmth and personality, and bursting with those “oh wow” moments. Over the next year, the 320sqm twostorey house, comprising five or six bedrooms and three bathrooms, took shape. When it came to the exterior, Peter explains, “we ummed and ahhed over the cladding; but in the end we went with Plan A: half cedar and half Rockcote cladding system.” The horizontal cedar boards wrap around the front of the house, tucking neatly into the white Rockcote cladding – the configuration achieving a perfect balance of contrasting materials and tones. With a backdrop of hills and trees, this home has a commanding presence. Of the details that make this home compelling, project manager Brayden McGuire remarks on the “oak flooring that leads you through the entranceway and into the familyliving area”, and commends the “stunning” oak veneer beams, which offer definition and distinction to the living spaces on the ground floor, whilst drawing the eye upwards. Between these beams, a staircase with glass balustrades leads upstairs, the glass folding

around the corner to frame a bridge that overlooks the comings and goings below – the combination epitomising the ingenuity behind the home’s design. Brayden also mentions the interesting internal upstairs window: with its bi-fold cedar shutters, it bursts through the patterned wallpaper to create a connection with the living spaces below – a further example of the innovative and charming ways that spaces interact. As Peter points out, “The home has focal points that bring us all back together.” The kitchen-dining-family – Peter’s favourite space in the house – is the nexus of family life, comprising many such focal points. The openplan layout, raised ceiling and feature window mean the space stretches into other areas of the home, whilst connecting with the garden. “It is one big area and has great flow,” he says. When asked to identify one aspect that makes this house special, Brayden’s response speaks of the exquisite, seemingly effortless combination of many features: “There are so many details – it is simply a beautiful house, inside and out.” Looking back on the process, Peter emphasises that “it was pretty daunting”, but that they have come out of it ‘rapt’ with what has been achieved.

As the region rebuilds after the earthquakes, Richard Dalman believes it is important to reflect on the quality of our new buildings.
I
n May, the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Resene Architecture Awards for Canterbury bestowed praise and recognition upon 25 projects from 70 entries throughout the region. The winning projects varied in scale from very large and complex to compact and humble. This month we profile some of the award winners. The Arts Centre Clock Tower and Great Hall was the recipient of a Heritage Award. The original buildings were designed by Benjamin Mountfort, with the restoration being completed by Warren and Mahoney Architects. The project was extremely challenging, and Mike Callaghan, a local architect and Canterbury jury convenor, commented: “Hands-on design development was required every day as no detail or space was the same... but the result is spectacular and thought-provoking.” Another winner, Burwood Hospital, was a collaborative project between three practices – Jasmax, Klein, and Sheppard and Rout. The outcome is a building focused on staff and patients’ wellbeing, many of whom have long rehabilitation stays. The extensive use of natural lighting, ventilation and views to the parkland contribute to a homely and comforting environment. The Christchurch North Methodist Church on Harewood Road by Dalman Architects is a strong but simple form that speaks of its religious function. The church is deliberately open and welcomes passers-by to view the congregation and worship space. The highlevel tower window serves to not only allow natural light to pour into the building, but also to acknowledge the spire of the former church, which had been a previous local landmark. Of the commercial winners, a public favourite is the Christchurch Adventure Park by AW
Architects, which was heroically saved from the devastating Christchurch fires. It consists of four simple building forms that create a village green atmosphere within the forest. Black metal cladding, pine plywood lining, and prefabricated elements were used to successfully meet the tight time frame and budget. A bold entry and Resene Colour Award winner is Fush, by C. Nott Architects, a fish ’n’ chip restaurant in Wigram. The restaurant plays on the imagination with the bold use of blue colour, giving diners an impression of being underwater. Each year the Institute recognises significant buildings of the past with an Enduring Architecture Award. This year there were two such awards presented: firstly, the mirror glass home in Butler Street by Maurice Mahoney; and secondly, the Templeton Chapel of the Holy Family by George Lucking. The latter is not only great architecture in terms of its form and function, but also in that it provides a critical place of focus and belonging for the local community. The awards aim to show why good architecture matters in the ongoing development of New Zealand’s cities, towns, and communities. In my view, it is clear from this year’s awards that many inspiring and unique new structures have been built, adding great character to our environment. I will, however, leave the final words to Mike Callaghan: “Great architecture begins with strong ideas; it is about creating exceptional environments for people to live, work, and play. It is also about joy – that sense of wonderment you find when you encounter an uplifting space or discover an unexpected detail. Architecture has the power to inspire, intrigue, and give meaning.”

Landscape architect Craig Wilson shares advice to show how a large property needn’t become a ‘life sentence’ block.

P
art of the enjoyment of working in the residential sphere of landscape architecture in Canterbury is the opportunity to work at a range of scales, with an equally wide range of clients. Projects can range from a spacious lifestyle block in Ohoka to a pocket-sized urban courtyard in a high-density central-city residential housing development. An effective landscape plan will see the same principles and design process applied, regardless of the size of the land parcel in question. The design elements incorporated at both ends of the scale can often be similar but utilised to reflect the differing project requirements and restraints. Landscape design in a rural context is no less complex than its urban counterpart but by nature is generally less intensive, with the design elements and project costs spread over a broad area. A good understanding of the resulting maintenance requirements must be evident, or the design aspirations may never be realised. A useful concept I learned from a cherished design mentor, which can be applied to keep maintenance levels in check, is that of the golf course, where the course and its surrounds are broken down into the ‘green’, the ‘fairway’ and the ‘rough’. This concept is useful to both organise and describe the resulting spaces and required maintenance input of a rural landscape design. When applied, these
conceptual areas may look as follows; ‘The Green’: the immediate area around the house and other key structures, where the design is of a finer scale with more detailed planting and the highest maintenance requirement. ‘The Fairway’: a wider area, visually and spatially connected to the house and still exhibiting elements of design, but with restrained detail and a reduced maintenance load. Lastly, ‘The Rough’: the extremities of a property which may only be seldom viewed or frequented and possibly only consist of lawn and trees, with mowing and an occasional spray and mulch around them the only maintenance needed. It’s pretty evident when you visit a rural property whether or not the owner has created an environment that matches their maintenance, skill and budget. Good planning and design can prevent the lifestyle block from slowly morphing into the often referred to and dreaded ‘life sentence’ block.

Art journalist Anne Hudson has the rare opportunity to explore masterpieces from the Tate Gallery in London, on exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery, until July 16.
I
f you are visiting Auckland before mid-July, I recommend a visit to the Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmaki. Auckland is very proud of this institution, a feeling that the nation should share as it is a beautiful place with award-winning architecture, and art of both national and international significance. The Body Laid Bare: Masterpieces from Tate looks at the representation of the nude body from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through to the contemporary era, and demonstrates how social attitudes and mores have influenced art throughout different historical periods. The earlier work was created for the pleasure of viewing, while the more contemporary pieces were created with the intention of challenging our ideas and perceptions. Drawing, painting and sculpting the human body has always been central to artists’ practice, which makes this exhibition so interesting. The title of the exhibition establishes our expectations; we will see the body, the human form exposed and laid before us for our titillation and edification. ‘Laid’ has more modern connotations which are not explicit in this exhibition, but themes of sexuality, gender, and feminism are an underlying thread throughout. Let us start with Lord Frederic Leighton’s The Bath of Psyche. This beautiful woman is like a
goddess, lightly draped in soft fabric and about to bathe. She stands in a classical landscape of Roman columns with her arms raised to create a sensuous pose, the framing of the painting designed by the artist to enhance the visual effect of the work for the viewer. This woman was created by amalgamating the most beautiful features of several female bodies, this Victorian version of image editing demonstrating the expectations and desires that governed the depiction of the female form at that time. What’s more, this beautiful woman also highlights gender politics of the era, as she was created originally with only the male viewer in mind. Nude portraits such as these served as outlets for gentlemen of the time to gaze upon the female form without being improper, while women were not permitted to view the works. Nowadays, by contrast, men and women can enjoy this lovely lady together, highlighting the shift in social and cultural norms that has occurred since the work was created. The following room leads us into the modernist era where the nude body is no longer depicted in the classical realm but instead in that of the everyday; the bathroom, the boudoir. The nude is still a central subject for these painters, but the sitter is now more than just a subject, increasingly she is a wife, a lover, a prostitute, or muse. Through this personal connection, we are invited into

the private space of the artist and his subject, and are encouraged to consider the body more intimately and perhaps voyeuristically. Pierre Bonnard paints his wife taking a bath and Pablo Picasso depicts his lover Marie Thérèse nude in an armchair, while Henri Matisse in Draped Nude places his subject in an exotic Moroccan setting. The signature work of this exhibition is Auguste Rodin’s The Kiss, the enormous marble sculpture of two entwined lovers caught in a moment of passion working on many levels. Its sheer size is quite sublime, with the poses of the beautiful couple simultaneously showcasing strength, beauty, passion, and vulnerability. The male, Paolo, is muscular with large feet and hands which hold the delicate almost childlike figure of Francesca in a loving embrace. In doing this, the piece is able to capture and create from stone a moment that is fluid, graceful, and tender, a material so synonymous with being hard, cold, and impassive. The exhibition continues with equally profound pieces that appeal viscerally to the viewer, while the artists reveal their souls through their work. This section of the exhibition is more challenging both visually and intellectually but time taken studying the work is rewarding. The work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Sir Stanley Spencer, Willem de Kooning and others make us aware of the fragility and complexity of life and love. We are asked to leave behind our stereotypical ideas of not only what should constitute a work of art, but also our social constructs of truth and beauty. Through the use of sculpture, abstract painting, and photography, the artists turn our accepted notions upside down and make us think about ourselves and our own reality, our own bodies and our perceptions of them.

Do you spend a lot of time sitting? Elly McGuinness gives us some simple tips to help us mentally and physically.
M
any careers in the modern world involve sitting at a desk for lengthy periods. If you drive to work, you’ll often find yourself in a similar position throughout your commute, meaning that your body is spending a large portion of the day seated and immobile. The potential negative effects of prolonged sitting can range from raised blood pressure and excess abdominal fat to chronic lower back and hip pain. Follow these eight tips to help improve your wellbeing and posture. Take breaks, and plenty of them. Stop for at least 5-10 minutes every hour and don’t feel bad for doing so. Overall, you should find
you’re more alert and productive throughout the day. Do a few simple stretches or go for a short walk during your breaks in order to get your body into a different position. If you have a tendency to work non-stop, set an alarm on your phone to remind you to get up each hour. Drink plenty of water. This will help your brain to stay alert and will help reduce the likelihood of making poor nutrition choices throughout the day. It will also help you to put the first point into action – if you’re drinking enough water; you will need to get up for bathroom breaks at regular intervals!

If possible at your workplace, consider setting up a sit-stand workstation so your body doesn’t remain in a fixed seated position all day. Get it set up professionally to ensure everything is at the right level for optimal posture. Go outside! During at least one of your breaks during the day, go for a walk outside. Also consider doing this before and/or after work. Exposure to sunlight can help boost your body’s vitamin D production and regulate your levels of serotonin, the chemical that helps control your mood, concentration, and sleep cycle. Go a step further and take a walk amongst nature if you can. Aim to regularly incorporate the ‘palms up’ posture into your day. This can helpful in combatting the forward-slouching posture that is so often conducive to tight shoulder and neck muscles. If your hands are on a keyboard, you can keep your forearms on your desk, but turn your palms so they are facing upwards. If you’re able to, consider closing your eyes for a minute while you do this, allowing yourself a bit of a ‘mental time out’. Try to find other opportunities during your day to turn your palms up (or facing forward if you are standing up). Plan ahead with healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetable sticks, hummus, nuts, seeds, boiled eggs, and even dark chocolate. This will help reduce the need to rush to the vending machine or cookie jar at 3pm each day, and will contribute to your overall health. A BMW WITH POWER AND POISE
Motoring writer Ross Kiddie spends some time behind the wheel of the brand new five-series.

yclone Cook was doing its darnedest to drench Christchurch but there was little choice, I had to make a journey to my mother’s country home. The car I was driving was BMW’s new fiveseries – the 530d to be exact – and it was the perfect vehicle for the wet conditions, offering the poise and control you can get only with quality engineering. As it turned out, the further west I went the drier the roads became, but that mattered little as the new five-series is a car that you can drive much the same wet or dry. Yes, the 530d has mammoth power outputs – 195kW and 620Nm – but such is the way it puts power to ground, and the superb traction control devices, that there is little fear that grip in any situation would be lost. The 530d has a high level of specification for comfort and convenience in addition to the aforementioned safety aspect. It sells at $133,900 in standard form, but with BMW’s long list of optional extras, the test car hits the road at $144,800, with some of the specification items including an M-Sport package – consisting of 20in wheels, dynamic damper control and special brakes. While it’s quite an outlay, you do get a lot of car for the cost. For one, the BMW five-series is big; at almost 5m it sits squarely in the large luxury car market and has all of the on-board elements to cocoon its occupants in elegance and opulence, while imparting a sporty feel from behind the steering wheel. Under the bonnet sits a 2993cc, straight six-
cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. Not only does the engine stand out for its high power and torque figures, but the level of refinement and smoothness is most un-diesel-like, as it is immensely quiet at all speeds. It is also a freerevving engine; a lot of the latter is due to the never-ending supply of gearbox ratios. The engine is paired with a silky-smooth eight-speed transmission. One of the aspects which impressed me the most was the undetectable gear shifts; while the rev counter flicks back and then forward at the point of change, the transmission itself is so clean at shift-point there is no feel. As you would expect, the driver can take control over the shift process through steering wheel-mounted paddles, and there are also sport and comfort drive management protocols which the driver can use to set up the vehicle for any particular drive route. With the strong torque figures and the area at which maximum torque is reached (2000rpm) there is a strong feeling of urgency within the engine, the five-series in this form will lunge to 100km/h from a standstill in 5.7sec and will make a highway overtake – 80km/h120km/h – in 3.8sec. These figures don’t come at the cost of fuel waste. BMW claims an amazing 4.7-litre per 100km (60mpg) combined cycle rating for the big six, although I’ll have to be excused for a 6.9l/100km (41mpg) figure during testing time. The trip computer also lists a 5l/100km (56mpg) instantaneous reading at 100km/h which, taking into account my heavy foot, are spectacular figures.

At highway speed, the 530d glides with quiet motion. Even with low-profile tyres the ride is fabulous, the suspension soaking up the uneven surfaces and making it hard to detect the jiggle often associated with stiff sidewalls. As you would expect with BMW, drive is channelled rearwards and because of the natural handling characteristics of rear-wheel-drive there is a neutral handling sensation. Taking into account the quality of feel through the steering wheel, the 530d feels biased towards sporty, but we are talking about a luxury vehicle, and the combination is sheer brilliance. If you also add in the punch from up front, the 530d is an amazing touring car. It dispenses
distance with ease and sips fuel until the point at which the driver is ready to launch forwards. It is also an easy car to drive at city speeds; the cockpit is loaded with clever electronic functions to make it manoeuvrable in tight confines, and if that metered car park has always been a navigational challenge, the 530d will park automatically for you at the touch of a button. It’s impossible not to be smitten with the new five-series, as it builds on the reputation of its predecessors but adds in an improvement factor that’s going to be hard to eclipse when the next generation rolls around, leaving me with the question – how good can future cars get?

I
have to admit, when I heard the restaurant was part of The Papanui Club, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But upon arrival, it was hard to miss the modern two-storey building, lit up with an impressive large glass lighting display inside that can be seen from Sawyers Arms Road. It opened just over a year ago and sits alongside the club’s other facilities, including bars, a carvery and a fitness centre. But you wouldn’t know it when visiting Embers – it seemed to be in a world of its own. When we were seated, we opened our menus to an impressive array of Argentinian-inspired options. And while there were vegetarian dishes, meat really took centre stage. For the entrée, I went with the prosciutto and manchego filled pastry empanadas, with wood-fired capsicum romesco. As we waited for our entrée to arrive, we were able to watch the chefs work their magic in the open-plan kitchen. From looking at the menu, it was difficult to decide what main to choose, given the options. The friendly waitress informed us the most popular choices were ‘From the Pit’, where you could choose from beef, pork or lamb cooked over the fire, served with duck fat roasted potatoes, vegetable medley, with house salad, chimichurri and red wine jus. But we couldn’t go past the mains. I opted for the venison with smoked garlic kumara whip, fava beans, candied bacon with blueberry and shiitake mushroom jus. The venison was tender and paired well with the kumara whip. The candied bacon was a nice touch, and added a bit of sweetness. My dining partner ordered the grain-fed Wakanui ribeye, with duck fat roasted potatoes, chorizo, chickpeas, wilted spinach, smoked tomato chutney and onion rings. As we ate, more patrons from the club’s bar filtered through to have dinner in the restaurant creating a vibrant atmosphere. When it came to dessert, we couldn’t look past the affogato. It was Embers’ take on the dessert, which featured coffee and vanilla bean ice cream, served with a Kahlua shot, espresso and honeycomb. Its presentation was excellent, served in a cocktail glass with a shot of Kahlua and espresso to pour over the ice cream. It was a nice way to top off a pleasant dining experience. All in all, Embers had a nice, social atmosphere, and was a good place to go for a laid-back meal out. The meals are on the larger side, however, so make sure you’re hungry. abulous art, providing nourishment to slake the soul’s hunger for refinement, boldly stood before the public at Wigram on a cold winter’s evening. Opening night of this year’s Great Christchurch Art Show proved to be an exciting spectacle, as pieces were eagerly snapped up in the electric atmosphere. As the crowd browsed, they were inundated with tempting catering as trays of goodies circulated the room and, at almost every turn, plinths laden with a dazzling variety of gourmet cheeses, fought with the visual treats for guest’s attention. What a brilliant party it was!

he Great Hall was decked out for an occasion of note, the rich wooden interior glowing warmly in invitation as guests filed in. Ronald McDonald House South Island (RMHSI) once again hosted the annual Christchurch Supper Club, an event always eagerly anticipated. Glasses were topped up by a bottle-wielding aerialist, dangling gracefully above the crowd, her lissom contortions drawing appreciative applause. Pulses were starting to quicken and palates were becoming roused as the mystery of who would be sent to where, to dine, stoked the mounting excitement. The evening then began, filled with gastronomic promise.

The quaint thoroughfare did though provide some relief, for those with the appropriate invitation, from the remorseless elements. Within the discreetly small boutique, where the gems of yesteryear twinkle like the stars of tomorrow, fizzing flutes caressed the lips and tasty temptations lifted the palates to the sunny place, where the angry winter out on the cobblestones, is faraway.

hether you’re new to the slopes, or a speed-loving veteran, there are some unwritten etiquette rules: If you want a good park then get up early, no one likes a pushy driver in the car park. Remember, everyone is trying to get up and down the mountain, so give way, smile, and don’t be aggressive. Karma’s a bitch. Don’t cut in the line for the chairlift – we know that you’re with someone who’s 20 places ahead and you really had to pee, but let us tell you now – we don’t really care. Wait your turn like everyone else. It’s okay to share a chairlift with strangers as, chances are, they don’t really want to talk to you either. Give right-of-way to skiers in front of you. Help out fallen skiers and, in some way, the universe will reward you. And you won’t look like a complete wanker. A helmet is essential – and on trend.

APRÈS-SKI • Monochrome is a perennially stylish and safe option, while orange or yellow neon trousers paired back with a black jacket is also a classic look. This season, sixties paintbox colours are on the rise and are guaranteed to get you noticed in the group. • Embrace your inner eighties diva and get your hands on some stirrup pants. They are having a comeback thanks to Balenciaga, so ensure you pack a pair for on and off the slopes. • Most ski accommodation is toasty. Don’t only pack cashmere – lightweight tops for layering are ideal when fireside. • Don’t pack high heels, please just don’t. • What’s this season’s trophy après-ski item? A statement coat; look to for something with an overly extravagant fur collar to really pack a punch. Wear it; don’t pack it, as it’s likely to take up an entire suitcase. • When drinking, do as the previous generation (pictured) did and swig straight from the bottle. This will minimise takehome rubbish and confirm someone else’s role as sober driver... or pilot.
